100 apprentices and trainees attend the CIBSE Lift Academy Event

LIFT ACADEMY

Over 100 apprentices and trainees attended the Lift Academy event in London on 13th February. This was an increase on the first event in November and many of the trainees had to stand as all of the seats were taken. David Cooper, founder of the academy, opened the event and welcomed them to the CIBSE conference centre for the second time.

Dennis Major, UK product manager of Pfeifer Drako gave a presentation about hoist ropes including different types, when to use each type, the benefits and disadvantages, lubrication requirements, common defects and how to detect them.

Plaistow Electrical Wholesalers (PEW) sponsored an event in which the apprentices were challenged to hold a weighted car top control unit at arms length. PEW presented the winning apprentice from Titan Elevators with a Dewalt Electric Drill.

Adam Scott, Chairman of the CIBSE lift group, gave a short talk about the group and its work.

David Cooper closed the meeting by thanking Pfeifer Drako for their sponsorship in providing the speaker, PEW for sponsoring the competition and CIBSE for their generous sponsorship of the event in terms of providing the conference facility and hospitality.

After the meeting David Cooper said “I am overwhelmed by the support from the industry as a whole and the increasing number of apprentices who attended. It seems that the concept of the Academy is something that the industry want and to that end I will make sure that it continues”

The event is scheduled to be repeated in Manchester during February and the following meeting will be in April where Global Lift Equipment will be presenting a talk about door gears.

17.30 Recruitment, Training and Competency of Engineer Surveyors
Richard Hulmes, SAFed SAFed member companies with the objectives of promoting safety and reducing risk, provide safety engineering inspection and assessment services both in the UK and internationally. These staff must have appropriate knowledge and understanding and must be comprehensively trained. In the lift industry these staff are the Competent Person under LOLER. The path to competence and its continuing professional development encouraging UKAS accreditation will be described.

18.00 Communication protocols for lift remote alarms to BS-DD265
Dr Gina Barney, Gina Barney Associates All lifts put into service under the Lifts Regulations must provide a means of contacting a permanently available rescue service. The requirements are prescribed in BS EN81-28: 2003. DD265 (Draft for Development) specifies requirements for a signalling protocol for communications between a lift alarm system and a rescue centre using DTMF signals. This presentation will describe how DD265 was developed.

Natural Ventilation

Much of the work of the Natural Ventilation Group is involved in dissemination of information and this is reflected in the seminar programme. Trainees on approved employer-based training schemes are respectfully reminded to submit their objective achieved reports and covering annual overview on an annual basis (i.e. anniversary of training commencement date).

The closing date for submissions to be received in time for consideration at the next meeting of the T & D Panel is 18 April 2008 latest to ensure your documentation is reviewed by the Panel for that meeting.

CIBSE College Visits

CIBSE conduct annual field visits to universities and colleges for students, academics, and staff interested in CIBSE membership, products and services.

Bobby Wright and Fiona Torrance visited the College of North West London in November 2007 and received an outstanding response from students and faculty interested in joining CIBSE. Students who are also employed are currently studying for an HNC that will fulfill the academic requirements for EngTech registration and Licentiate membership with CIBSE.

In January, Fiona visited Stockport College and received a similar enthusiastic response. CIBSE are producing a discounted publication package for students with options on CIBSE guides relevant to coursework. The package will be available very soon. CIBSE Ken Dale Travel Bursary Open To All Members

The Ken Dale Travel Bursary has been established by CIBSE to commemorate Ken Dale’s contribution to the Institution and our industry.

The bursary will allow CIBSE members to travel and research areas connected with the applicant’s field of work and which will benefit CIBSE, their employer, their clients and the professions within the building services engineering industry more widely.

The closing date this year for applicants is 17 March 2008 with a commemorative presentation made at the President’s Dinner in October by the successful applicant. International Professional Engineer (IntPE) and Engineering Technologist (IntET) Register for UK Chartered Engineers Working Overseas

CIBSE Membership – would like to draw its members attention to the option of belonging to the IntPE and IntET Register – if they are working overseas.

International Professional Engineer (IntPE) Register

This Register is governed by the Engineers' Mobility Forum, which consists of the national engineering organisations of Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK and USA. FEANI has observer status.

Entry to the Register, which began operation in 2002 - the UK section of the Register opened on 1st October 2002 - is open to registered Chartered Engineers (CEng) in the UK who meet the following criteria:

• have been assessed within their own economy as eligible for independent practice
• have an academic qualification equivalent to an accredited degree
• have seven years post-graduation experience
• have spent at least two years in responsible charge of significant engineering work
• are maintaining relevant continuing professional development at a satisfactory level

International Engineering Technologist (IntET) Register

The IntET Register has also been set up by the Engineering Technologist Mobility Forum, which comprises ECUK and the national engineering organisations of Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.

UK registered Incorporated Engineers (IEng) are deemed to have equivalent competences to those who elsewhere in the world are generally described as engineering technologists.

To qualify for the IntET title, it is necessary to hold an appropriate academic qualification (generally a bachelor’s degree, HND or HNC) and have a minimum of seven years’ post-graduate experience as an engineer, with at least two years in charge of significant engineering work. Applicants also need to show an up-to-date record of continuing professional development.

Applications have to be made through the candidate’s engineering institution. The registration fee is £90, renewable every five years at a fee of £25. Successful applicants may use the titles ‘IntPE’ and ‘IntET’.
